Scholarships

Jensen Scholarship: These funds were donated by Mrs. Jensen to be used to further the education of students from Tawas Area Students that show a financial need.


Werth Scholarship: This award is from Elmer and Eliza Werth Foundation and is to be used specifically for educational scholarships for graduates of Tawas Area High School. THe following criteria will be used: Potential for Success, Financial Resources, Community Involvement, "Werth" Ethic, and Overall Suitability.


Joseph Barkman Scholarship: Mr. Barkman passed away in 1975. He was a very giving man who also donated the land where St. Joseph Hospital was built and the property for the first Masonic Temple. The scholarship fund created by Mr. Barkman’s will stated the scholarship was to be first importance but also give recognition to the importance of general good citizenship and need for financial assistance in pursuit of higher education. Recipients of this scholarship may include graduating seniors, as well as currently enrolled college students. His will also stated once a student was selected, he shall be favored to receive succeeding grants or awards from year to year.

Coyle Scholarship: This award has been made possible by the generosity of the late Mike and Betty Coyle. Thomas Michael Coyle, born in Bay City and raised in Tawas was a graduate of Tawas Area Schools. He met his wife, Betty, while attending the University of Notre Dame, where he played football for the varsity team. After his graduation, the couple lived a short time in Tawas and then moved to Bay City, where mike worked 30 years as an insurance adjuster. The scholarship was first awarded in 1996.

George E. & Dorthy M. Green Scholarship: This award has been made possible by the generosity of the late George and Dorothy Green. The Greens were married over 58 years and had one daughter. George was raised on a farm, became a carpenter and construction supervisor and worked throughout the state of Michigan. Dorothy was a homemaker along with being employed many years at Tawas Industries. Having been lifelong residents of the Tawas Area, it was their desire that this fund be used to help further the education of Tawas Students with a 2.5 GPA to 3.52 GPA.

Dean & Marge Arbour Memorial Scholarship: Dean Arbour, Founder of Dean Arbour Automotive Dealerships passed away in 2017. Both Mr. & Mrs. Arbour believed in being active members of the local communities. They were supportive of local schools, extracurricular activities, and programs to give students opportunities to succeed beyond high school. Mr. Arbour was a firm believer in working hard to get what you want in life. The Dean & Marge Arbour Memorial Scholarship is available to students attending college or trade school and certificate programs to honor those strong beliefs. After John Dean Arbour passed away, this scholarship was established in his memory by his daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Scott Chapleski, along with their two daughters Ali and Haley. Their wish is to continue his legacy and help students achieve their goals and dreams beyond high school.
